Detroit is the largest city in Michigan state in the USA. It lies on the Detroit River, and is situated north of the Canadian town of Windsor (which lies immediately across the river and could be considered part of metro Detroit--except that it's in another country).
The city of Detroit has a population of 916,952, with a metro area population of 4,467,592. It ranks as the eleventh most populous city in the U.S. In 1950, Detroit had a population of 1.8 million (almost double today's population). The population decreased because of white flight (white people moved from the city to the suburbs because of racial tensions) and the construction of major freeways to outlying areas. The metro area today maintains a large population, but not concentrated in Detroit City. Detroit city's population to this day is over 80% black.
