Shenzen is a large city located in southern China in Guandong Privice. It is located just north of Hong Kong, just beyond the border of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Shenzen itself is a SEZ (special economic zone) created to capitalize on its proximity to Hong Kong. These SEZs have more economic flexibility and more business friendly environments than mainland China as a whole.

Before the creation of the SEZ in 1979, Shenzen was a sleepy little village, but huge amounts of foreign investment as well as economically-incentivized migration, made this a boom town of monstrous proportions. Its population is now larger than Hong Kong`s with over 10 million people.

Basically the same as Hong Kong`s, Shenzen`s climate is subtropical, with hot humid summers and mild winters that are fairly dry.

Guangzhou is the third largest city in China, as well as the capital and most populous ity in Guangdong province. It lies only 120 km north of Hong Kong, and a slightly smaller distance from Shenzen. It was known historically as Canton, the origin of the name of the Cantonese language. The city`s population is a whopping 12.78 million.

The city shares a similar climate with Hong Kong and Shenzen, a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet, and humid summers and mild, dry winters. April through September bring the monsoon season, with high humidity and heavy rainfall occuring regularly.

The area around Guangzhou contains many highly populous cities which can be thought of as a single megacity with a population reaching as high as 40 million people. These cities include Shenzen, Dongguan, Foshan, Jiangmen, Zhongshan, and part of Huizhou.

If we count not metropolitan areas but only cities themselves as independent entities, then Shanghai is the largest city in the entire world. It has a municipal population of over 23 million people. That, of course, also makes it the largest city in China - even larger than the capital city Beijing.

The city is situated in the eastern part of China, in the Yangtze River Delta at the mouth of the river.

Shanghai was a small town until it was opened to foreign trade in 1842 with the creation of the Shanghai International Settlement. This planted the seed for Shanghai to become the financial and industrial powerhouse that it is today, where the financial worlds of east and west meet.

Shanghai has a less extreme climate than Beijing, being located further south. Its climate is considered subtropical, with hot humid summers and cool and wet. Though temperatures below freezing are not the norm and snowfall only occurs once or twice a year. Spring and Autumn are generally warm and pleasant.

Hong Kong is part of China, but is unique as it is a Special Administrative Region of China, along with its neighbour Macau. Hong Kong used to be administered by the UK, but was returned to China in 1997. Part of the deal of its return was the concept of "One country, two systems" which means that Hong Kong is part of China but is goverened largely autonomously. The exceptions lie in foreign policy and defense.

Hong Kong has a population of over 7 million people crammed into approximately 1104 square km (426 square miles), which makes it one of the most densely populated places in the world. It has become known as "the world`s most vertical city" because of all its high rise buildings and apartments, designed to efficiently maximize use of limited space. Its population density and limited space has also led to a highly utilized public transportation system, with 90% of the population using public transport. This is among the highest rates in the world. Hong Kong is a world financial center because of its low taxes and low barriers to business creation.

I have personally spent a week in Hong Kong, and the amount of experiences to be had in this one small area is quite mindblowing.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, and a former territory of the United Kingdom. Many think of Hong Kong as a city, and indeed Hong Kong is a busy and vibrant urban center. But Hong Kong is an area comprising 1,108 square km (428 square miles) of land, including some land connected to the mainland of China, as well as a number of islands.

Hong Kong is broken down into 18 administrative districts, in three main areas. Those main areas are Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. For all intents and purposes, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon comprise the city we know as Hong Kong, while the New Territories comprise the outlying areas.

Hong Kong has exactly 236 islands. The major ones are Hong Kong Island and Lantau Island. Lamma Island is also an important residential island that can be accessed by ferry from Hong Kong Island.

The two most major rivers being Huang He (Yellow) River and Chang Jiang (Yangtze) River. But China has over 50,000 rivers (!), with an average catchment area of 100 square km each. All the rivers in China together have a total length of 226,800 km. They have a total flow of 2.6 million cubic meters.
