Honolulu is the biggest city and state capital of the US state of Hawaii. Located on the island of Oahu, the city is a medium size one with 390,738 people. The metro area turns this into a major city of 953,207. But due to the huge numbers of tourists visiting Hawaii around the year, Honolulu is a much more bustling place than a lot of other cities of this size.

Honolulu has a tropical climate with warm weather year round, with slightly cooler and wetter winters, though sunshine is common throughout the year. In the winter moneths the temperature range is typically 18-27 degrees, while in the summer months, the range is typically 23-31 degrees. Not a lot of variation, though when it`s cloudy during the winter, with the sea breeze from the ocean, it`s not uncommon to feel a little chilly. But it`s still much better than being in New York or Toronto during the winter!

Kahoolawe Maps and Niihau maps

This entry deals with two islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, Kahoolawe and Niihau islands. I decided to put them both into one entry, because neither of very big, popular, or searched for online. So I thought I`d jam them together into one entry.

Kahoolawe is an uninhabited island, and the smallest of the eight main Hawaiian islands. It lies near Maui and Lanai, approximately seven miles or 11.2 km southwest of Maui. Its total land area is 44.6 square miles, or 115.5 square km. At its longest point it is 11 miles/18 km long, and at is widest point it is 6 miles/9.7 km wide. Talk about small!

Niihau island boasts a massive population of approximately 130! It is slightly larger than Kahoolawe but not much. Its total land area is 69.5 sq miles/180 km squared. It is situated about 17.5 miles/28.2 km southwest of Kauai, which lies on the other side of the Kaulakhi Channel. This island is the site of a small naval installation.

With total land area of 596.7 square miles (1,545.4 km2), Oahu is not the largest island in Hawaii, but rather the third largest. However, it does have the largest population out of any of the islands at 953,207, and is the seat of the state capital Honolulu.

The island resulted from the overlapping of two shield post-eruption, with a broad valley in between them. The island is also known by locals as "The Gathering Place". One of the famous features of the island is Diamond Head, a volcanic tuff cone.

Molokai Map

Molokai is a popular island in the Hawaiian archipelago and known for its stunning natural beauty. In fact, its scenery is featured in the Hollywood Blockbuster Jurassic Park. It is the fifth largest island in Hawaii, with a land area of 260 square miles - 673.40 km squared. The West side of the island faces Honolulu, and lies approximately 25 miles (40 km) away, across the Kaiwi Channel. Lanai island lies to the south of Molokai. Lanai and Maui are visible from the south section of the island, and Honolulu`s nightscape and shining lights can be seen from the West side.

Two overlapping shield volcanoes form the island of Molokai. The two are known as East Molokai, and the diminuitive West Molokai. The highest point on the island is Kamakou on East Molokaʻi, towering up to 4,970 feet (1,510 m). It is a sparsely populated island with only 7,404 people counted in the latest census.

Lanai Island is the sixth biggest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. It is affectionately spoken of as "Pineapple Island". That moniker is not because of the somewhat pineapple shape of the island, it`s actually related to the island`s historical role as a pineapple plantation. It is a rather small island, measuring only 18 miles, or 29 kilometers, at the widest point. And its total land area 140.5 square miles, or 364 square km.

The island has a small population of 3,193 and is not widely visited by tourists who come to Hawaii.

Geologically speaking, the oldest of the Hawaiian islands is Kauai island, dating back to 6 million years ago. But It is only the fourth largest of the islands with a land area of 562.3 square miles (1456.4 km), and has a fairly small population of around 58,000. Hawaiian locals refer to the island casually as "Garden Isle".

The island of Kauai is volcanic, as are other islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. The island developed as a result of the Pacific plate`s passage over the Hawaii hotspot. The tallest mountain peak on the island is definitely Kawaikini, rising to an elevation of 5243 feet, or 1598 meters.

Maui is the second largest of the islands of Hawaii, with a land area of 727.2 square miles, or 1883 square kilometers. It is also the name of the county that includes the island itself, plus four other smaller islands named Lana`i, Kaho`olawe, and Molokai. The island has a population of 144,444, making it the third most populous (after O`ahu and Hawaii).

The climatic conditions on Maui are surprisingly varied, with different areas of the island having quite different amounts of clouds and rain fall, varying humidity levels, and different temperature ranges.

One popular activity for tourists on Maui is whale-watching, since Humpback whales come to the `Au`au Channel in winter. It is also know, of course, for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vacation atmosphere.

The Island of Hawaii, also known as "The Big Island", is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. In fact, not only is it the largest but it is larger than all of the other islands put together. Its total land mass is 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2). The island`s political entity is the county of Hawaii, which exists within the state of Hawaii.

At its widest point, the island is 93 miles or 150 kilometers wide. The very tall volcanic mountain called Mauna Kea is located in Big Island Hawaii map. The island is actually comprised of 5 shield volcanoes that erupted in sequence and build on top of each other.

Having joined the Union on August 21, 1959, Hawaii is the newest state in the USA. It is entirely comprised of islands, making it unique amongst states in the country. And along with Alaska, it is one of the two non-contigous states, being separated from the mainland of the USA. It lies a whole 2000 miles (3200 km) southwest of the continental United States.

The archipelago that makes up the state of Hawaii consists of 8 main islands, namely Hawaiʻi, Maui, Oʻahu, Kahoʻolawe, Lanaʻi, Molokaʻi, Kauaʻi and Niʻihau, as well as countless other smaller islands. Its entire land area is 10,931 square miles (28,311 km2). The highest point in the state is Mount Kea, with an elevation of 13,803 feet (4207.3 meters). The state capital and largest city is Honolulu with 377,000 people, and around 953,000 in the city plus the surrounding county.
