Kolkata is the principal city in eastern India and is the capital city of the state of West Bengal. It was the former capital of India under British rule until 1911, when the capital was changed to New Dehli because of Kolkata`s somewhat out-of-the-way location in eastern India, as well as separatist sentaments in Bengal. The city declined significantly after Indian independence in 1947.

It is a huge city of 4.5 million people, with 14.2 million in the metro area which includes the surrounding suburbs. Crossing the city in a taxi is an exercise in organized chaos. No wait - just plain chaos. Its sheer size, traffic volume, and anarchic atmosphere are hard to put into words.

Kolkata`s climate is tropical, with distinct dry and wet seasons. Winters are short with relatively mild temperatures. But the operative word there is "relatively", with daily highs in the 20s the norm even in winter. The main difference in winter is that night time and mornings can be cool, in the range of 10-12 degrees celsius.

The city of Delhi, India is the capital of the country and the second largest metropolitan area in India. It is also the 8th largest metropolitan area in the world. The National Capital Territory of Delhi has a population of 16,753,265. The greater National Capital Region has an even larger population of 22.2 million. This area includes some satellite towns surrounding Delhi.

Technically speaking, Delhi is a metropolitan territory, and the capital city of India is New Delhi, one of the cities that lies within the metropolitan territory. Delhi is located in the north central part of India. Its climate is subtropical, but with a tilt towards tropical. Its summer is very long and extremely hot, with June to September experiencing heavy monsoon rainfall. Late November through March brings the "winter" though this is probably unlike any winter you`ve ever experienced. With high temperatures between 20 and 30, the winters are not cold. The daily lows can be cool, with night time and early mornings reaching around 7 degrees in the peak of winter. But the daily highs will be much warmer. Winter sees heavy fog for which Delhi is famous.

Delhi, the capital of India, is a huge metropolis with a massive road system and sometimes chaotic traffic situation. To be honest, I wouldn`t be caught dead driving in Delhi, but luckily for people like me there are many public transportation options as well as anb abundance of cheap taxis.

The Delhi Bus Rapid Transit System is a system currently being developed for the city of Delhi, and will be integrated with the (not yet operating but coming soon) Delhi Monorail and Delhi Light Rail. These three systems will combine to make public transport more convenient in this massive metropolis.

Traffic in Delhi is mostly road-based, which causes heavy traffic problems. The light rail and monorail systems will hopefully ease road congestion. In addition, overpasses and flyovers are being considered to create more space above ground level.

Formerly known as Bombay, the city of Mumbai is the biggest city in India in terms of population. Its population is over 12 million in the city proper, and over 20 million for the metro area. That makes it the fourth largest city in the entire world. It is also considered the richest city in India - though poverty is still very evident throughout the city.

The city lies on the Western coast of India and has a large natural harbour, making it an important port city. It has a tropical climate that features dry, monsoon, and post monsoon seasons.The dry season lasts from December to May. From June to September, heavy monsoon weather affects the city. Occasional monsoon rains occur in October and November, which are typically considered the post-monsoon season. I have been to Mumbai once in late June, and much of the city was flooded with monsoon rains and an overloaded drainage system.

This is the 100th post on Free Printable Maps, so I decided to focus on the country that I am most interested in travelling to next: India. South Asia Physical Maps

South Asia is, like it sounds, a region in the southern part of the continent of Asia. It's exact definitions depend on the authority, but it usually includes all of the following countries: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and British Indian Ocean Territory (also known as Chagos Islands). Countries sometimes included are Afghanistan, Myanmar, and even Iran (by the UN's definition). I would ignore those choices myself, because they clearly fall into other regions.
