Lima is the capital city as well as the biggest city in the South American country of Peru. And when I say it`s the biggest city, I mean it`s a massive city - the biggest city by far. It has a whopping population of over 7.6 million in the city proper, and 8.5 million in the metropolitan area. That is approximately a third of the population of the entire country. It is situated in the center of Peru, on a desert plain that overlooks the Pacific. Its metropolitan area extends to the coast and incorporates the seaport of Callao. It is the fifth most populous city in Latin America, after Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro.

The city was founded by the Spanish in 1535, and became the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Then, after Peru gained its independence, Lima became the capital of the new Republic of Peru.

Lima is a major destination for tourists, especially the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Lima and Rimac - the historical districts of the city. Other attractions include the beautiful and extravagant colonial architecture such of the Monastery of San Francisco, the Catherdral, Covenant of Santo Domingo, the Palace of Torre Tagle, and the Plaza Mayor.

The climate of desert is pleasant and comfortable, despite its location in a so-called subtropical desert. The summers (ie. winter in the northern hemisphere) are warm and dry, while the winters (summer in the northern hemisphere) are mild with little variation between day and night temperatures. Winter daily lows are between 12 to 16 degrees, and daily highs are between 16 to 19 degrees. And I`m talking degrees celsius, so don`t panic, Americans!

Buenos Aires, Argentina is the most populous city in the South American country of Argentina, as well as its capital city. After Sao Paulo, Brazil Buenos Aires is the second-largest metropolitan area in the continent of South America. It has a city population of 2.9 million, and a metro population of around 12.8 million.

Strangely, the city of Buenos Aires is not the capital of Buenos Aires province - in fact, it is not a part of the province at all. It is its own autonomous district which is governed independently.

Buenos Aires is located in the southern hemisphere, which means that January is the hottest month. Summers are hot while winters are mild and sometimes cool, especially at night and in the early morning. Downtown Buenos Aires, near the ocean, rarely experiences frost, though some of the inland suburbs do in fact see frost on occasion.

Political Map of South America

South America is a continent in the Western Hemisphere, and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere (though part of it extends into the Northern Hemisphere as well). Geographically speaking, all of the Americas is one continent and South America is considered a subcontinent. But politically it is its own self-contained continent with characteristics that make it quite distinct from North America.

There are twelve countries in the continent, including (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. French Guiana is an additional territory there, which is under the sovereignty of France, and not an independent country. Panama is typically considered to be part of North America rather than South America, being situated in the Central America subregion of N.A.

The total area of South America is 17,840,000 square kilometers (and that means 6,890,000 square miles for all you Americans!). The population is more than 371 million.

One of the uniting features of most of the countries in the continent is the Spanish language, though the biggest country in South America, Brazil, does not use Spanish and uses Portugese instead.

Patagonia Map

Below you can select a Patagonia map that you think will be helpful for your reference or travels. Patagonia is not a country but rather a geographic region consisting of the southermost part of the continent of South America. It lies within two countries, Argentina and Chile, though not all of those countries' territory lies within the region of Patagonia. This region features the southernmost portion of the Andes mountains in the west and south, and a plateaux and lowlands in the east. Its northern boundary is the Neuquen River and Colorado rivers.

The Argentine part of Patagonia consists of mostly steppe-like plains, which rise in a succession of terraces, each one about 100 meters higher than the one before it as we move towards the Andes. It is covered with mostly shingle and very little vegetation, but as we move towards the Andes vegetation and wildlife becomes more abundant.

Santiago is the capital of Chile, South America. With a population of 5,278,044 it is the largest city in Chile, and also has the largest urban area with 7,003,122 people.

Santiago City lies inside the Santiago Basin, a fertile plain surrounded by mountains with the Andes to the east, and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west. Extensions of the Andes also lie to the north and south, making the city surrounded almost entirely by mountains.

Brazil Curitiba Map

Curitiba is the capital of the state of Parana in Brazil. It is a large city with 1.8 million people, making it the 7th largest city in Brazil and the largest in Southern Brazil. The metropolitan area totals over 3.5 million people.

The city is located at 932 meters above sea level, making it relatively cool compared to other major cities in Brazil. Its climate is subtropical, with mild, wet winters and warm summers. But summer weather is not blistering hot. The highest temperature ever recoreded in the city is 35.6 degrees celsius, or 96.1 farenheight, and the summer average is around 21 degrees. The winter average is around 13 degrees. Winter nights and mornings can be cool and even cold. Snow has fallen a few times this century but not often.

Moreso than many other major cities in Brazil, Curitiba has a large majority of Brazilians of European descent. After the city was originally conquered by Portugese colonists, European immigrants from other countries including Germany, Ukraine, and Poland.

Physical Map Of Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America and fifth largest country in the world. In fact, it occupies nearly half of the continent of South America, in total 8,514,877 km2 (3,287,597 sq miles). It borders Uruguay to the south, Argentina and Paraguay to the southwest, Bolivia and Peru to the west, Columbia to the northwest, and to the north lie Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana.

It is so large that it spans three time zones. Its landscapes include mountain ranges, plains, highlands, hills, and scrublands. Our image of Brazil usually consists of Rio di Janeiro's beaches and the Amazon Basin, but in fact much of Brazil lies at 200-800 meters above sea level. Some areas of Brazil have an equatorial climate, others a highland tropical climate, others a temperate climate with coniferous forests, semiarad desert climates (in the northeast).

The largest city in Brazil is Sao Paulo with an impressive 11,150,249 people. Rio de Janeiro is second with 7,145,472 people.

There are 26 states plus one federal district of Brazil.

Climate Map Of Latin America

Latin America is the part of the Americas where the Romance languages of Spanish and Portugese dominate.
