Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the principal city in the state, with a population of 594,833. That makes it the 28th largest city in the United States. The larger Milwaukee metropolitan area has a population of 1.75 million, and the Greater Milwaukee area which includes 7 entire counties has a total population of over 2 million. So it may only be ranked 28th in the country, but it is quite a big metropolis in practical terms.

The city is located on the edge of Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes found in the American Midwest. The climate of Milwaukee is a typical Midwestern climate which falls into the humid continental climate. Summers are warm and humid, while winters are snowy, windy, and cold. Average high temperatures in July are 26.7 degrees C (80.1 degrees F), while the average high temperature in January is -1.7 degrees C (28.9 degrees F).

People living on either of the coasts may assume that Milwaukee is a provincial backwater with a mostly white population, but the city`s population is actually nearly 40% African American, and close to 16% Hispanic.

A while ago I posted an entry about printable maps of the USA, and one of the most popular maps on that page was a blank map of the United States. So today I decided to gather more maps similar to that one and upload them for your benefit.

People who might benefit from these blank USA maps are students who are studying American geography in school and need to quiz themselves, and also teachers who can use these maps for geography tests and the like. I always had a hard time memorizing the locations of all 50 states, so I wish I could have easily printed out maps like this when I was in highschool. Maybe I would have gotten a better grade in geography!

13 Colonies Blank Map

Below you can find a 13 colonies blank map for your reference and school work. Teachers will find these maps useful for tests or homework assignments in which the students might remember and identify the original thirteen colonies of the United States of America.

The thirteen colonies were originally British colonies, in the northeastern section of what is now the United States, on the Atlantic coast. The colonies declared indepedence from the British Crown on July 4, 1776 during the American Revolution. This began over disputes over taxation by the British Crown.

You probably know it already, but just as a little reminder, these are the 13 colonies: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

The USA is an interesting political entity because it is a federal union of states, which are all a part of one country but have a large degree of state autonomy. There are 50 states in the union, though that may some day change if a territory of the US such as Peurto Rico or Guam opt pass a referendum to opt into the union. But for now, those 50 states include 48 contiguous states (often referred to as the Continential United States) as well as Hawaii, a state comprised of islands in Polynesia; and Alaska, located near Russian and separated from the Continental US by Canada. Each state in the US has its own state government and elected governor.

Hilton Head Island Map

Hilton Head Island is a resort island in Beaufort County in South Carolina. It is situated closer to Savannah, Georgia (32 km or 20 miles away) than it is to Charleston, South Carolina (153 km or 95 miles away). It is a small island of 55.5 sq miles, or 143.9 km2, with a local population of 37,099. The entire island is an incorporated town, called either Hilton Head Island or Hilton Head.

Despite its small local population, every year many tourists (in fact, over 2.25 million visitors) from the mainland make their way to Hilton Head to enjoy its beaches, parks, and cultural events.

Amelia Island is an island off the coast of Nassau County, Florida. The island hosts a number of annual events, including musical and film festivals, sports tournaments, and other cultural events. It is a small island measuring at 21 km long and around 6 km wide at its widest. In terms that Americans would understand, that is 13 miles long and about 4 miles wide.

It is a barrier island that pleases visitors with its pristine beaches and variety of wildlife.

Sanibel Island Map

Sannibel Island is situated in Flordia, off the Gulf coast near Fort Myers. It is a tiny island that consists of 33.16 square miles (or 85.9 km2 for Americans), and has a small local population of just over 6000. The entire island is incorporated as a city, called Sanibel.

The island retains its quiet and peaceful natural environment, in large part thanks to the Comprehensive Land Usage Plan, a conservation plan aimed at limiting development that would harm the island`s ecology. However, the old ferry that used to run between the mainland and the island has been replaced by a causeway. The first causeway featured a draw bridge, but a new higher bridge that runs uninterrupted is now functioning.

Sanibel Island is popular with tourists for its beaches and wildlife sanctuaries, including the "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Like most of south Florida, the island has a humid subtropical climate that is hot and humid in summer, and mild and humid in winter.

Las Vegas is actually a major city, but to most people around the world, the name "Las Vegas" means specifically the Las Vegas Strip. That is the stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard that goes for 6.8 km (4.2 miles). A little known fact is that the strip is actually not inside Las Vegas city. It is outside the city limits in two townships called Paradise and Winchester.

It is a strip covered with major hotels, casinos, resort properties, nightclubs, and other places for vacationers to stay and enjoy themselves. The wild and outlandish architecture of some of the hotels and casinos on the strip is itself a major attraction for tourists.

Great Lakes Map

The Great Lakes are located in the northeastern section of North America, straddling the border or Canada and the United States. The 5 Great Lakes are Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Eerie, and Lake Ontario. Measuring based on the surface area of their water, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, covering 244,106 square km - or 94,250 square miles. In fact, they hold 21% of the world`s fresh water on the surface.

A number of large cities and towns are located on the Great Lakes, the largest being Chicago which sits on the edge of Lake Michgan, as does Detroit. Toronto sits on Lake Ontario.

The Canada-USA border cuts through Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Eerie, and Lake Ontario. Only Lake Michigan is situated entirely in the USA.

Map For Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls are world-famous huge waterfalls that straddle the Canada-US border. On the Canadian side of the border the town of Niagara Falls, Ontario lies adjacent to the falls themselves, and on the American side lies Niagara Falls, New York. With the free flow of tourists and locals alike across the border, the twin towns are essentially part of the same urban area.

There are 3 main waterfalls: Horseshow Falls lies on the Canadian side of the border, while American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls lie on the American side. The two sides are separated by Goat Island, which is uninhabited.

Despite their grandiose reputation, the Niagara Falls aren't all that high, only 52 meters (167 feet). Compare that to Angel Falls in Venezuela, which measures in at 979 meters (3,212 feet). But the Niagara Falls are very wide and the sheer volume of water rushing through them is impressive.

Map of 52 States in USA

I was a little bit surprised to discover that many people on the internet are searching for the phrase "map of 52 states in USA". That's really interesting, because there are only 50 states in the USA, not 52. I think that maybe some non-Americans mistakenly believe that there are 50 continental states and that Alaska and Hawaii are an additional 2. But that is not correct. Actually there are 48 continental states, and Hawaii and Alaska make 50.

There are however some US territories that are not full US states but are administered by the US. One is Puerto Rico, lying in the Caribbean Sea. It is classified as a commonwealth, but in many ways functions like a state and its residents are US citizens. Others include Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (of which Saipan is the capital), the United States Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Some people may mistake some of these for states when in fact they are not, though they are administered by the US.

Map Of Anwar Alaska

The ANWR (Artic National Wildlife Refuge), or Anwar as it is regularly referred to, is an area comprising 19,800,000 acres (80,000 square km) of Northern Alaska. It is the largest protected wilderness in the USA, protected by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980. But the act deferred making decision about the 1,500,000 acre (6,100 square km) coastal plain where oil discoveries have been found. This deferral of decision on the "1002 area" has caused the current
controversy over potential oil drilling in Anwar.

ANWR, including the 1002 area, is an extensive area of natural wonders. A large range of both large and small animal spieces live in the area, as they have undisturbed since time immemorial. Those in favor of oil drilling in the area say that it would decrease US dependence on foreign oil, and create jobs and economic activity in the US. Opponents of drilling say that the amount of oil that can be retrieved from ANWR is not great enough to significantly lower world oil prices, and is not great enough to justify the potential environmental damage to one of the world's most pristine and beautiful areas.

Climate Maps United States and Canada

The United States is a huge country with widely differing climates depending on the region, ranging from polar in Alaska to tropical in Hawaii and southern Florida.

Other climate types include Marine Westcoast climate along the northwest coast of Washington and Oregon states; a Mediterranean climate along the California coast; alpine climate in the high mountainous regions such as the Rockies; a desert climate in parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah; semiarad steppe climate; humid subtropical climate in much of the southern United States; and humid continental climate, with cold wet winters and warmer summers, in much of the northeastern US.

Most of Canada's land area is subartic, with arctic tundra in the far north. The bulk of Canada's population, however, lives in southern Canada near the US border where climate conditions are different. The coastal area of British Columbia has a marine westcoast climate, similar to that of the American northwest; most of southern Canada has a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters; and in southwestern Canada there are mountainous alpine regions and semiarad regions. These semiarad regions can be extremely hot in the summer (I have experienced 42 degrees in the Okanagan region) but quite cold and snowy in winter.
