Northern Virginia is the name of a region in the north part of Virginia which includes the Virginian portion of the Washington Metropolitan Area. It has a total population of 2.6 million, making it the largest metro area in the state. Of course the wider Washington metro is more expansive, but here we`re just talking about the section that is found in Virginia.
There is no official definition of Northern Virginia, but is just a loosely-defined region.
