Jakarta is the capital city and largest city of Indonesia, and is also one of the largest cities in the world measured by population. If we use the entire urban conurbation as the unit of measure (meaning not just Jakarta, but the urban sprawl as far as it stretches) then Jakarta is second in population size only to Tokyo, Japan. The conurbation has a population of 21,800,000. Jakarta city itself has a population of 8,640,184. That doesn't make it a top 5 city in terms of population, but it is still amongst the top cities.
As you can imagine, Jakarta is huge and confusing and disorienting. It's important to know where you're going and how you're going to get there before you set out. A good map is essential. You can find a map of Jakarta below that is useful for your reference and basic planning. But I recommend you find a current and highly detailed map of Jakarta when you arrive in Indonesia.
